Lycopersicon esculentum, specifically, the Marglobe Tomato, is a nightshade and belongs to the family of Solanaceae, and is a cultivar of the Solanum lycopersicum, or more commonly known as the tomato. The Marglobe was developed in 1887 by Luther Burbank. It is considered to be an open-pollinated tomato. The plant grows to a height of about 5 feet and has regular leaves. The Marglobe Tomato is bright red and uniformly round. It averages about 4 ounces and has a firm texture with few seeds. This makes the Marglobe a preferred all-around variety as it performs well both raw and cooked.
