Bibb developed it in Frankfort in 1935 and widely cultivated in the United States in the early 1900s. This plant matures to a height of 8 to 12 inches and boasts loose heads with light green foliage.

The annual plant Lactuca sativa var. capitata belongs to the Asteraceae family. In 1894, W. Atlee Burpee & Co. derived Iceberg Lettuce from the French Crisphead lettuce, Batavia, under the name Batavia. The leaves are crisp and mildly flavored.
